Hazards, Adaptation and Operations Branch - Lands and Minerals Sector, NRCan

A branch within the Lands and Minerals Sector (LMS) of Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) that brings together programs and services for a strengthened focus on resilience and protecting Canadians from natural hazards. All programs in this Branch have a focus on increasing Canada’s resilience through emergency management and public safety related services, whole-of-government programs and tools related to climate change impacts and adaptation, and providing logistics support to enable science across Canada’s landmass including the Arctic. This Branch will be also responsible for Results and Strategic Planning for the Sector, including raising awareness of the impacts of our science. 

Areas of expertise

  • Canadian Hazards Information Service (CHIS) – operates sensor networks that provide monitoring, detection, alerting and public information 24/7 for hazards such as earthquakes and space weather for Canada, provides real-time information to support emergency management decision-making, and maintains specialized capacity to respond to radiological and nuclear emergencies.

  • Climate Change Impacts and Adaptation Division (CCIAD) – works in practical ways with governments, professional and Indigenous organizations, and the private sector to advance climate change adaptation action in Canada.  This work includes capacity building and the generation of decision-useful information and tools needed to understand and adapt to the effects of a changing climate.
  • Planning and Science Liaison Division (PSLD) – leads on driving management excellence and fostering a results-based focus for the Sector through implementing effective stewardship, tools and practices to strengthen accountability and align planning and reporting processes. This includes expertise and guidance on audits and evaluations (both sector specific and department wide). The work of S&T Liaison focuses on outreach and fostering awareness and understanding of the of the impacts of LMS’ science and technology contributions.
  • Polar Continental Shelf Program (PCSP) –  is Canada's Centre of Excellence for logistics support over the Canadian land mass with a strong emphasis on contributing to the performance of science and the exercise of sovereignty in the Canadian North. PCSP provides what for many is not only an important, but a critical service.
